  6. I like the pattern but I don't understand what you mean by knit the odd rows. Do you mean knit the whole way on the back then the pattern on the rs or what? I'm still learning as a knitter. Thank you for the help.

    1. Hi there! Sorry for the enormous delay in response...we've been battling the stomach flu at our house and I had my wisdom teeth out earlier this month....YIKES!

But thank you very much to the person who commented below -- spot on! After you cast on, knit Row 1. Follow the pattern for all the even rows (2, 4, 6, etc) and knit all the stitches on the odd rows (3, 5, 7, etc). Happy knitting!

    2. I love this idea, but when I made it, my numbers don't "pop" out as they should; any ideas? Maybe tighter knitting would help? I'd like to figure out what the problem is because I see you have so many other "theme" patterns - so cute!!
      thanks

    3. A big thing would be needle size. The smaller the needle, the better the design stands out, which is why I use US#3. Also, try to keep your tension even as you are switching between knitting a stitch, then purling. I think the blocking process also helps out a ton! I'll be posting on that later this week. Hope this helps!

    4. Hmmmmmm.....needles were size 2...hmmmm, I'm gonna try another one and see. And I look forward to the blocking info. Thank you!!

  7. an odd row is rows 1,3, 5 etc as opposed to even row which would be 2,4, 6

  9. hi i am making an afghan for my grdson to go to college and it is made with panels. so far, i have two 48 st. panels with large cables. in the center i want to put his initials and the year 2012. i started one with white background and black #s and i am not a bobbin knitter dont know how to get back neat so i am now going to make everything letters and background in white.i see you make cloths with letters if i follow your instructions will my letters be on the right sid3e of the afghan? and then i want to put in his initials a j p or just a p according to my cable panels i have 319 rows. (big boy) i appreciate any help you can give me. thanks so much and have a good day.

    1. Wow, sounds like quite a project! =) The instructions for the 2012 cloth are written from left to right, as you are looking at the right side of the finished cloth. The SNOW cloth is written the same way, if you are looking for an example with letters. If you chart your own "J P" letters, read the chart left to right, knitting all stitches on the right side and creating the letters on the wrong side. I hope that makes sense!? Let me know if this doesn't help and I'll try to explain it better. Good luck!

    2. Thank you. Ok so i think i have it, if i just follow your instructions the way it is written i will have it the right way. Am i correct? Since my panel are cabled which is in the knit stitch and the stitches around the cable are purl, i will have to switch your instructions to purl where you knit and visa versa. i am starting it tonight and hopefully I will have it right. Again, when knitting an afghan you start from the bottom up (basically) so I need to start from the bottom or last line and work up to line 1, is that correct?. I know how to knit but sometimes I do not understand the instructions, I have wasted 3 days so far trying to do the letters and #s but they are reversed ( I thought I knit from bottom line and knit from right to left, very confusing)I do appreciate any help I get and thanks again

  10. Hia! Thank you for that great pattern. I had saved it and just made it last night. Very easy to do with your clear explanation. I'm not great at creating letters and numbers and was wondering when you will update with 2013 so I can start making a few before the end of the year. As you said they are perfect presents. Thanks again for sharing.

  11. Me again, please explain the letters to me again, if you dont mind. I have found letters and I need the right side to show the letter, I thought as I said before, if I knit the purl and purl the knit everything will be good. Again i will follow the instructions as written (do I knit from the last line or line 1) I am sorry to be so stupid, but my swatches were not working out right.

    1. Ok, let's see if I've got this! =) If you are placing cables in place of the garter stitch border, you can still follow the pattern above by knitting your cable border, knit all the way across the rest of the panel (this would be the right side). On the wrong side, purl the cable border, then follow the instructions in the pattern above. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions. I'd also love to see your afghan when you're done!

    2. You are a doll for being so patient with me. I got the pattern from the internet it is a 24 st. panel, with 2 seed sts. p4 k12(which is cable) p4 and again the 2 seed stitches. This is a 18 line pattern. I have already made 4 48 sts.(doubled pattern) and now have started the middle one which I want to use the pearl background and the letters A J P 2012 . I made the 4 panels in Kelly green and the middle will be white, colors of Binghampton Univ. Each panel has 319 rows which include the start and finish of k 2 rows. I am following your 2011 dishcloth and hopefully it will come out right. I thought if i did K 2 rows and the 3rd row I started with a pearl row I figured out how many rows between letters and #s. Your 2012 has 23 rows (I think, not near my instructions at this moment) and the letters I found have 55 so i figured out that I need 26 p rows between letters and #s its just how I knit. From the start I am k2 rows, p1 row k 1 row for lets say 23 rows then I started your instructions from left to right at the 23 row and will work up to row 1. I am going to do the same with the letters I found. I hope I am doing it the right way and will not have to rip out. I only have about 3 rows done of your instructions so that is where I am going now to bed to knit. If this makes any sense to you and you see I am doing wrong please let me know, before it is too late. Got to get this one done and start on the next for the next grdson. and get done before aug, when they leave. When i am done I will get someone to post it for me I promise. Next afghan I will knit only 2 panels and have them 96st. less sewing tog. Boy oh boy has this got me confused I am good at just following instructions in ktg. not changing things around. Sorry to be a pest. Thanks sooooooooooo veryyyyy muchhhhhhhhhhhh.

    3. You're not being a pest at all, I just hope I'm helping you go in the right direction and that you don't have to rip it out! =)

  12. Hi again, I did it and it came out great, followed your instructions. Now i knitted 26 rows and am starting on his letters. Will do the letter P (last name) and I am working as the pattern says from line 1 down to line 53, not from line 53 up to 1 is that correct? These letters do not tell me to start on wrong side, they give instructions to k 1-4 then on 5 k 3 p29 k3 etc. I have started it and somehow it does not look right. I am already on line 15 and like I said it does not look right unless I have to wait for it to be done. I am just afraid I will have to rip out. So bottom line is do I knit from line 1 down, or 53 up? I am knitting as told and made this panel the knit side as your sample shows. Thanks once again, I am just frustrated.

  13. I think it depends on how the other designer wrote their pattern. I'm sure that's not very helpful (sorry!) but I vary how I write the patterns based on the design. If you don't think it's looking right, I would go with your instinct and rip it before you get too much more work into it. Keep me posted!

    1. Hi again. Your 2012 came out beautiful, thank you, thank you even if I did have trouble reading it at first (my problem) once I followed your instructions it was great. Now I have started the P from Rhonda White on knitting knonsense and I already ripped out 30 rows because P was not right. I just noticed something and want to bring it to your attention. My tail (yarn from cast on) is on the left because your instructions start with a left side of purl. This "P" starts with 4 k rows which I am eliminating and the 5th starts with k3, p29 k3. Actually your #s also start on the right side. I have been doing the k1 row, P 1 row before starting the letter therefore, I ended p row and now begin the k row or row 1 of their pattern. Are you totally confused? I am. Anyway the bottom line is before I continue if I start their pattern on a k row (row 5) will the "P" be correctly knitted with the 1/2 circle of the "P" come out as we write the letter?I am truly sorry to put such a burden on you but I need help desperately. I thank you in advance

      Delete
    2. I AM confused! =) I made up a letter 'P' for you with instructions below. I omitted the border, as you said you're skipping that anyway, and this pattern is over 27 sts, so you could add more knit sts to the beginning or end of a row to compensate. Start on the RS of your afghan!

      Row 1: K27
Row 2 and all even rows: P
      Rows 3 - 29: K18, P4, K5
      Row 31: K6, P16, K5
      Row 33: K5, P17, K5
      Row 35: K4, P18, K5
      Row 37: K4, P18, K5
      Row 39: K4, P5, K9, P4, K5
      Row 41: K4, P4, K10, P4, K5
      Row 43: K4, P4, K10, P4, K5
      Row 45: K4, P4, K10, P4, K5
      Row 47: K4, P4, K10, P4, K5
      Row 49: K4, P4, K10, P4, K5
      Row 51: K4, P5, K9, P4, K5
      Row 53: K4, P18, K5
      Row 55: K5, P17, K5
      Row 57: K6, P16, K5
      Row 59: K7, P15, K5
      Row 61: K27

Remember....start on the right side! Let me know if you need any more help!

    3. I now ripped out for the 4th time because I looked at what you told me to do and I think it will be right. Again, I do not know how to thank you for being so kind and working with me. I want to explain my panel. I have 58 stitches,319rows to my cable panels. So for this panel I am working on I already put 2 knit rows for border,of the 58 stitches each side has 2 seed st.(k 2 rows)then I did 25 rows k 1 row, p 1 row, then I put in 2012 which took up 23 rows. After that I originally knit 31 rows but I just ripped out 20 some odd rows that I started a "P", hopefully I can rip out just enough rows to start your "P". I figure this to be 21 rows between each letter A J P and 4 in between, K1 row, P 1 row between the letters. this is how i figured 319 rows, 2 border rows 2x's,25 k1 row, p1row,23 rows 2012, 21 rows between each letter (4x's) and 61 rows for each letter (3x's) I think that makes 319 rows. Too tired now so I will finish ripping out (might go down to 2012) and count the rows (not sure when I rip out how many rows I have done) Hopefully this will be correct, but I trust your instructions, they make sense. I have been kntg. for many many years and you can see I do by instructions not knowing what my stitches are really called, I think 1 row k 1 row p is stocking net st. I know it 1 row etc. When I get done with this I will have become all grey, it really got me crazy. Tell me where you got the instructions so I can get my next 2 A and J as I have already figured them into the panel. Someone told me to graph but I do not know how to . I cannot thank you enough, if you live in N.Y. somewhere I would take you to lunch. Before I start your letter maybe I should ask if you would give me the A and J so I will known how many rows I need between dont want to do your letter and then have to look all over for the same style and rows for the other letters. Please let me know if it is ok before I start. Again, many thanks,

  15. Whoever you r I love you. I ripped 3 times so far, someone told me to follow instructions from line one down and to read the line backwards. I started that last night and I think it is better, not sure, but the original instructions were definatley wrong. I have already done about 20 rows and will give it a chance for a few more rows otherwise I am sure yours will be perfect, but I have to continue to see. I appreciate all the work you put in for me and I will keep those instructions. Will keep you posted on what happens. Again, I cannot say thank you enough. Oh if I do your letter than I will have to ask you where you got the instructions because I will need an A and a J. I bet you now wish you never gave me the P. Again, I do not know who you are but you are a doll.

  16. Kelly, How do I say Thank You again, Yeah, Wahoo,Oh my gosh!!! you are a genius. Guess what? I am 3/4 way done with my P and it came out right. I feel so much better, you have no idea how frustrated I was and lost over a week of knitting. Stayed home all day to catch up and probably will finish the P tonight, then tomorrow I can knit up the 21 rows I need before I start the J. I cannot thank you enough. I have now begun to see true white wool or wool that was never used before. I am so excited.

    2. Hi, No I did not start the other letters because I was not sure where you got your P from. I want to make the same style and amount of sts. the same as what you did for me. Is there a site I can find your letter? I looked at your profile and I see I cannot take you to lunch, I wanted to thank you, maybe if you get to N.Y. you can let me know, it would be my pleasure as I do appreciate your help. The P came out great. I did find a site with block letters, but not your sts. and rows. I was working on them to see how I could make them like your letter. I will work on them tonite and hopefully start to knit them up. I hope they look like yours. I need to finish this afghan and get started on next so my grandson can take to college in late Aug. So far your 2012 and P look spectacular, just hope I dont screw up the other letters. Again, you are a doll and have helped me immensely. Thanks again.

    3. I actually charted the P out for you...I could do the same for the other letters, it might take a day or two though! I'll get back to you as soon as I can! =) Hang in there!

    4. Hi Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I did it. Like I said I found block letters on line in a chart. Not too swift am I, but I think I now have it, after doing some alterations to instructions and having to rip out a couple of times, I think I now have it. I wanted to start where you started. It may not be your letter exact but I used the same amount of p sts. to form the letter. Again, I have not got enough to see if it is correct, but will let you know. I am sure I will have problems with the A. Only if you get the chance (and I have 3 dtrs. so know how busy one can be and 6 grandchildren all of whom my kids let me be their nurse the first few weeks and watched them for many years after. Now those little ones are--2 going for medicine, my only grdtr. just got a job in advertising, 2 which I am making blankets for going to college, and my 6'1 baby is a sr. in h.s.) gosh I am old. So if you get the chance and it is no problem, I would love your A & J (in case mime is not right).I think I will go look for another pattern for the next afghan which will be blue and gold, this is green, white and now I am looking for instructions on how to crochet my panels with black. Any suggestions? I am a pain, I am sorry but again you are a sweetheart. Thanks my name is Phyllis and I am not anonymous too wide all around.

  17. Kelly, I think I did it. It is looking good, did not finish halfway up and the hook part came out the right way. It looks sort of what you made for me. I printed out the A and it looks like I will be able to figure that one out too, decrease some stitches and rows. The only thing I see different from yours is that the P that you made is not a complete box there are some decreases so it slants. I was figuring on cutting off the top of the J to slant as well as the A. Do you think that is right? I just dont want you to waste precious time on me. If it were not for you I dont know what I would have done. Now I have no one to bother and my lunch date still stands, come to N.Y. and I will meet you. I have not tried to put the afghan together yet, I will try crochet or I will try to knit the two panels together with black, need to figure out how to do that. I was thinking of picking up 6 stitches in black and continue the seed st. as each panel ends and starts with the seed st. have to figure it out. Again thank you muchoooooooooo muchhhhhhhhhhhhh. I found a friend in Wisc.

    1. Hi Kelly, An update, I finished my J came out good but made one mistake, the hook on the J is too short should have made it a few rows more, but its OK need to go on. Am just going to start the A and then I will be finished, sew or crochet it together and give it to my AJ. Need to start on the next one for Andrew gotta go buy wool, must look up colors for Delaware. How many weeks left before he leaves? Gotta go shake my bootie. Have a great day.

    3. I know i thanked u a million times and i feel if it were not for u to get me started on the letters my afghan would not be as great as it is. it is all together now just the finishing cutting of yarn and weaving. Just went to A.C. Moore and bought the wool for my other grandson, nice colors royal blue and gold. I brought the afghan into athe office and everyone said they wanted one. i hope i can get this one done before he leaves as the size is a bedspread very big will keep them warm in the winter. If i get my grandson to put it on line for me I will send a pic. Two problems I see, (of course, I see and no one else will the stitches mistakes) J not big enough (hook) and I guess the white wool which I ripped a few times does not look like my other knitting I usually knit uniformly and this is not, but again who cares and will my grandson know, not at all. Have a great day.

    1. Hi there! I'm not sure what to tell you about knitting left handed...my sister is a leftie, but my mom taught us how to knit when we were little and she learned to knit right handed. I'm sorry I don't have better advice for you!

As for graphing out a pattern, you can decide which side to create the pattern on. Some people prefer to knit all the stitches on the right side and create the pattern on the wrong side by purling the stationary (stockinette) stitches and knitting the stitches that create the design while others prefer to do the opposite. For me, it depends on what the picture is, or if the border is garter or seed stitch. Ultimately, it is up to you, the designer, how to knit it.

    1. Hi there,

I do start from the bottom up. I think it's best to use Excel, its so easy to fill in blocks with color and you can really see your design take shape.

The 2012 cloth has 43 sts, so first decide how many border sts you want. (You could do 3 or 4, depending on your taste.) After you have filled in those blocks, along with a bottom and top border, you will have a square or rectangle that is blank. Start your design by filling in blocks with color, moving or deleting as you see fit. There really isn't an exact science to it, and I'm aplogize if this isn't making sense!

If you are looking for letter specifically, check out this pattern (it is an old English styled "A"): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/old-english-letter-a

If you're looking for a more traditional, block letter "A", head over here: http://www.knittingknonsense.com/a_cloth.html

I hope this helps! As for knitting left handed, I'm a righty myself and although my sister is a lefty, she was taught and continues to knit right handed so I'm not sure. Knitting in reverse would make sense though!

Good luck and let me know if I can help with anything else!

  23. I am really enjoying the theme/design of your site.
Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues?
A number of my blog audience have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome.

Do you have any recommendations to help fix this problem?
